Garfield XC

Anna Dailey - 2009 4A Cross Country State Champion! First in GHS history…Read about her as Seattle Times Star of the Week.

Quoted from dyestat.com about Anna and the 3rd fastest time in WA history ran on the Sun Willows Golf Course...

"Garfield senior Anna Dailey became one of the top female preps to traverse Sun Willows since the distance was increased to 5k, as her 17:58 victory left her behind only Megan O'Reilly (17:35-2005) and Brie Felnagle (17:53-2004) on the all-time course list".

Dailey's season is far from over as she will be representing Washington State in Nike's Borderclash meet in Portland, OR on the 22nd of this month. She will also be competing in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, where National champions, All-Americans, and Olympians have added to the prestigious history of the FLCC. Foot Locker CC is the longest running high school cross country race in the nation, comprised of four regional 5K races in the Northeast, Midwest (Kenosha, Wis.), South (Charlotte, N.C.) and West (Walnut, Calif.), with the National Championships in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday, December 12, 2009. More than 10,000 of the nation's high school runners are expected to compete in the regional meets this year…

BOYS:

Our boys for the first time since 1995 qualified a team to the State Championship meet! They had an awesome season and earned the respect of many, being the ONLY team from Seattle Public schools qualifying a team to this years championships - of boys or girls and of any division. Chris Wozniak led the boys team with a 32nd place finish, followed by senior Michael Cunetta in 40th place. The team finished in 12th place, despite members of the team battling sickness. They have started building a foundation of success and high expectations that we will continue qualifying and competing at the state championship meet.

Last, but certainly not least…I would like to also mention that both Girls and Boys teams won State Academic Outstanding Team Awards!

I am so proud, and honored to be their coach…

GIRLS:

Udpate 11/3/09:    Notice any shaved heads?...

This past weekend was a historical one for Garfield, as the first time since the 1990's our Boys Team qualified for the State Championship meet. (Ironically, my brother was on that team).

This was the first time since being in 4A KingCo have we made it this far, and boy does it feel grrrreat!

We knicked off high ranked Skyline by a mere 2 points for the 3rd place qualifying spot.

FYI - This year has been a controversial one as WIAA cut back the state berths from the KingCo/Greater St. Helens Bi-District from 4 teams/ top 20 individuals (moving on to state) to only 3 teams/ top 15 individuals which made the qualifications even more challenging. (KingCo is one of the most competitive leagues in the state for Cross Country as many runners/teams are state champions or highly ranked in the state) We have came a LONG way, as our program was second to last in KingCo only a couple years ago!…

On our Girls side, we have Anna Dailey who won the Bi-District Championship title and is ranked #2 in the STATE!

Let's congratulate and support our Bulldogs as they head down to represent Garfield in Pasco for the State Championship Meet this Friday.

And if you see my hair dyed purple, you know why:)

Update 10/23/09:

Let us congratulate Anna Dailey who has earned the crown of 4A KingCo Conference Champion by smashing on her competition by winning with a blazing season P.R. of 18:06!!!

Sophomore Tamzin Atkins, and Freshman Kendall Jones also individually qualified on to the Bi-District Championship meet next Saturday in Kelso, WA.  Running without Isis Rush, one of their top varsity runners who was out with the flu, our girls varsity team just missed the qualifying cut by only 1 place and failed to make it to the District meet. Other varsity members, Kate Lemly, Jenny Charmley, freshman Raisah Vesteinsdottir, and Elise Herrmannsfeldt had a strong finishing last race of the season.

Our boys team led by Michael Cunetta and Chris Wozniak (finishing 10th and 12th respectively) led the boys varsity team for a second straight visit to the District Championships!  Filmon Tekeste, Duncan Clark, Ryan Peterson, Ben Corwin, and Jacob Franklin finished off the varsity squad with everyone's eyes and hearts on making it to the 1st ever state appearance since racing in the KingCo conference…  Their team will be representing Garfield in Kelso, WA next week with that goal in mind.  Yes, we believe we can fly and touch the sky! :)

A multitude of other runners not listed above competed their hearts, minds, and bodies out for Garfield today!  If you know of any of them that run on the XC team, please take the time to congratulate them for an awesome season and performance.  They are not only athletes, but students first.  Both girls and boys teams receiving recognition for their high academic achievements and learning how to juggle it all…

I am proud:)

Please support the bulldogs as we go into our KingCo Championship League Meet at Lake Sammamish State Park next Thursday!

Update 10/7/09:

Garfield XC Boys team took the win yesterday defeating a tough Mercer Island team (5th in State 2008)!  Also beating out Inglemoor and Ballard.  11th grader Chris Wozniak (5k-16:03) won the boys race with a strong finishing kick passing up the leader from Inglemoor and winning by 7 hundreds of a second.  Michael Cunetta was only 1 second behind (with a tight 3rd).  Filmon Tekeste (11), Ryan Peterson (12), Jacob Franklin (13), Duncan Clark (14), and Ben Corwin (19) finished off the winning varsity squad.

Girls team finished 2nd behind Mercer Island (2008 3A State Champions!) by 14 points and was led by Anna Dailey (5k-18:27) who was runner up in the race, with Tamzin Atkins (5), freshman Kendall Jones (9), Isis Rush (12), Kate Lemly (16), Renee Tryon (30), and Elise Hermannsfeldt (32) on the runner up varsity team.  Ballard and Inglemoor finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

Highlight: University of Washington's Head Coach Greg Metcalf who led his women's Cross Country team to a NCAA Division I National Championship title this past season, (and heading toward a repeat this year) shared some encouraging words and support for Garfield Cross Country! (And of course he was wearing purple…lol)  Go Dogs!  And Dawgs!

To keep posted on the season - you can check out athletic.net for results.

Thanks for your support and our last regular league meet of the season is next Wednesday 4pm at Upper Woodland Park (v. Roosevelt and Ballard)... KingCo Championship meet is Thursday Oct. 22nd if any of you are interested in coming out to Lake Sammamish State Park and supporting your bulldogs.
